Heritage Audits

The first step in managing your heritage is to know what you have and where it is. We have developed a number of methods of gathering together data over wide geographical areas and exploring its potential for heritage projects including excavation, research projects, local community events and smaller NLHF projects. Increasingly, local communities are joining forces to better understand, protect and promote their heritage. Many create landscape partnerships and seek funding from the heritage lottery fund to create a heritage audit which will then produce a series of heritage activities which can be eligible for funding. We have also enhanced historic environment records for local authorities in order to make them more accessible to the public and in doing so, increased their eligibility for NLHF assistance. Heritage audits are also useful to identify opportunities for interpretation or the need for protection associated with long distance footpaths and recreational trails, railway heritage paths and canal walks.
